Wow, I can't wait for this movie.
But by all means, all those who are making this movie, Please please and please take your time and do NOT rush the production. Let us produce a movie that is of high quality. Please take your time in all phases of development.
While we will respect a different spin to the Conan with Schwarzennegar, we still need to remember that the core elements of the Schwarzennegar edition are absolutely wonderful. Why fix something when it ain't broke.
For all the producers, please put in lots of money into this movie. And for the screenwriter and future director, put all your energy and passion into what will be a masterpiece by your very skills.
Remember, do not rush production!
Conan should not be made into something sadistic and dark. Just like Tim Burton ruined the new Planet of the Apes (2001), I do not want a different 'spin' on the image of Conan as a brutal and scary figure. Indeed he is a barbarian, but that does not mean he has to be dark and a character who no one would like to associate with. Let us think of a wider audience and the future of Conan. Furthermore,
to be open minded and open to change does not mean we have to go down the path of ruining the reputation of yet another great movie franchise, just for the "artistic vision" of a few who like to see such dark depictions of an otherwise vibrant, energetic and interesting character that is to be CONAN!
Final word is this; Make the new character of Conan to be a positive breath of fresh air that does not make him a ruined product of some try hard directors' who choose to make a mockery of him by applying their view of what Conan should be like. So commit to a similar Arnold Conan, and produce a movie that we will want to watch in future generations to pass the Conan throne to our future generations!
Thanks
I own the complete chronicles of Conan, in a beautifully covered book. Robert E. Howard made a marvelous epic of events.
However, upon examining this thread, Let us define what dark really means...
I want to focus on the development of the character of Conan himself for now though.
Now the identity of Conan IS brutal and indeed he is a barbarian. BUT I have to point out that the true character of Conan is not this gothic, sadistic psycho who desires killing for the love of it, but a wonderful valiant hero who becomes a king by his own hand in the face of adversity and in the situation of need. To be a king and a great hero, Conan should be a character who is interesting, has human traits and the audience must gain a link with him.
I know I like to envision a Conan who I can relate with and someone who I can refer to in conversation, without the general public turning their ears to look at you weirdly because the new movie depicts a "monster" Conan.
I am under the impression that making a great movie under the influence of an artistic vision by a certain director, such as that of the new Planet of the Apes by Tim Burton, could be detrimental to the fan base of Conan fans.
Well "NOBLE BARBARIAN" is an interesting play of words, I admit.
In the Arnold Conan, the movie slogan was of similar, if not much more thought involved quality. Notice the progression in character development from the very tagline of the movie. Thief, Warrior, Gladiator, King.
So, a noble theif, no.
Noble Warrior, maybe.
Noble Gladiator, probably Courageous and defeatless Gladiator.
Noble King, YES, Conan becomes a Noble King.
I really like talking Conan, it brings this wonderful content to life. Anyone agree with me?
Lanti, I am proud to be "stuck with the old Arnold movie". What is wrong with it?
Interestingly, there is heaps of areas for improvement, but this can be done without the major impact on the central role of the character of Conan.
I will be happy to see change and modification from the Arnold Movie...
But what I have said throughout all my posts, is that we should create a strong and interesting Conan who shines with all the characteristics Robert E. Howard intended. Furthermore, tried and proven methods should remain within the core of the Conan movie to be. Why throw out the quality stuff?
I am not sure why so many people can not see that radical change can pose a threat to a quality piece of fiction. In my own opinion, radical change from the 1982 version of Conan may be detrimental to the fan base, especially towards a cult status epic such as Conan the Barbarian.
Don;t get me wrong, I enjoy improvements and change, but I don't appreciate a future Conan who is not very appealing to the majority target audience of viewers.
A self titled movie must centralise itself with that character, and so my constant attention to the development of Conan is my key interest.
What is your views on what Conan should be like?
The video game surely presents interesting facets of of who Conan and similar characters should act, look and talk like. Age of Conan is a game which many people choose to be a character (may be Conan himself) and develop that character in the rich and vibrant world Howard created, the land of Hyboria.
Surely most players want to work towards designing and maintaining characters who are interesting, noble, appealing, and are cool enough to showcase for their friends and family.
The Age of Conan game is out very shortly, and will satisfy many Conan Fans before the new Conan Movie gets made. At least the game will set the scene for producers to see the large market interest in the Conan franchise in this time frame of 2008-2012.
As for some of the last two posts, could you please clarify yourselves?
Hoping the Conan story be enlivened... Bye for now.
